I will be using a box for colocation and need to figure out which option is best. I can use a 1U server for $95. I can use a 2U server for $135. But this does not include a firewall. I can rent a Cisco ASA for $50/month from my colocation provider.

Option 1-

Go with 1U for $95 + $50 firewall = $145 per month.

Option 2-

Go wit the 2U for $135 and use the software firewall. I won't have a hardware firewall, but I can fit more drives in the server and have more storage space. What does everyone think?

Do you really need the extra 1U to add drives? That should be your decision making question. I would rather take the firewall over more storage space. Especially with the size of drives on the market now.

I would personally choose the 2U with IPtables it's a great firewall on its own.

I would go 1U with a hardware firewall. GR has a good point, what would you need the extra drive space for?
