I am trying to figure out how to setup a firewall that will work with 2 switches on the same network. If there are two "core" switches and one is a failover, can you have a firewall feeding both of them? I would want it setup to go the primary switch and if that fails, go the 2nd one automatically. How does this usually work?

Yes, people do them all the time that way. It's called reduntdant interfaces. The firewall will detect an outage from the primary switch and flip over to the secondary. The entire process takes only a few milliseconds and the firewall will carry over the existsing firewall sessions that were present from the primary link. It works great.
